Alyson Duncan
My name is Alyson Duncan. I am a daughter, a sister, an aunt and a Spina Bifida warrior. I was born with Spina Bifida Myelomeningocele. Life hasn’t always been easy, but I try to make the best of the days i’m given.
Imagine being married to the love of your life and expecting your first baby. Everything seems perfect until the child is born, only then do you realize things are about to get more challenging than you ever dreamed. This happened to my parents. My mother had a seemingly normal pregnancy, but then I was born with what is known as Spina Bifida Myelomeningecele. Spina Bifida literally means split spine. My spine did not form correctly and was partly exposed at birth. My parents were told i’d never walk, if I lived, but I have been blessed to have been able to walk unassisted most of my life. I’ve had somewhere around 16 or 17 surgeries in my 31 years on this earth.
My life has definitely been no sunny walk in the park, but i’m still blessed and try to make the best out of every day i’m given. I’ve had several limitations put on my life, but I still try to live as normal of a life as any 31 year old. I function a little differently, but I still breathe, cry, laugh and love like everyone else.
